Preserver of the Root is a much more solid choice than Northpoint Captain in my opinion, but appart from that I do run a pretty similar list and indeed it performs fairly well against most decks. I do also run a couple of Young Mammoth instead of the third copies of Pit Lion and Resolute Ally, since it is a more reliable three-drop.
