Telvanni Blade Master – Deck Tech

What is Telvanni Blade Master and why should I play it?
TESL has a very diverse meta and a ton of strong archetypes from Altar of Despair to Mono-Red Crusader. But few have the stormy combo potential of item based decks. Whilst Item-Sorcerer is a long running archetype, it lacked substantial card draw early till the recent Houses of Morrowind set in Indoril Mastermind. But why play Telvanni over sorcerer? Though it may have less consistency in terms of card draw. The extra cards allow for better filtering cards and gives access to a stronger control shell. With the strong control elements, and challenging combo plays, piloting Telvanni Items is an absolute blast. If you’re looking for the premiere combo deck to “storm off” with, Telvanni Blade Master has it in troves.

Core Cards:
Master of Arms – Where do I even start with this value machine? WOW, it’s my favorite card in the whole game by far with how powerful playing it alone is. Assuming your graveyard didn’t get banished, Master of Arms has immense value combined with Gardener of Swords.
Gardener of Swords – Part 2 of the “Of Brothers,” Gardener of Swords is to Master of Arms like the Robin is to Batman, they’re so good I can’t put it into words. The combo is so ungodly strong late game when you can double Gardener into a Master and draw a million items out of your graveyard that the animations sometimes take longer to play than your turn. Gardener and Master takes you to value town and your enemy into F#!$@Kville.
Galyn the Shelterer – You can’t combo off if you don’t draw the pieces or they don’t survive the turn. Galyn gives you more Masters or Gardeners with which to combo into to help you close the game faster.

Game plan:

Early Game (Turn 1-6) – Cycle, discard, control. Early on this deck is vulnerable to aggro which is where all the removal comes in. Mulligan for your 2-3 drops so that you can you can chump block and trade more effectively whilst cycling into your combo pieces and discarding your dead cards. If your enemy is playing it fast, hold fast and control, you out-value almost every deck. If you’re playing against a hard control deck like Support Mage you can push for damage early and win but it can be risky if you don’t close out.

Creature cards to mulligan for or keep:
Studious Greybeard* – Solid keep against slow matchups, excellent discard outlet as it’s a Scout’s Report on a stick
Ungolim the Listener – Always a solid turn one play
Barrow Stalker – Always keep against aggressive matchups
Palace Conspirator*
Cornerclub Gambler* – Excellent 3 drop, high risk high reward and is excellent at trading
Galyn the Shelterer – Solid early body to trade, target Master of Arms or Gardener of Swords
Indoril Mastermind*
*See below for good discard targets for these cards.

Spells to keep:
Firebolt
Scout’s Report* – Strong and cheap filtering card
Sorcerer’s Negation – The silence is excellent and the 2 damage makes this wipe even some of the most powerful cards, especially Gardener in the mirror matchup
Reverberating Strike – Absolutely decimates a token deck early, powerful even if you trade 1 for 1

Mid Game (Turn 7-11) – Depending on how you played early game, you choose to go all in on a turn 9 Master-Gardener combo, assuming you’re set up well for it, or dig in and cycle faster with all your mana. You’re set up well if you got a dragon priest mask and a few other items in the discard pile, making for a solid 2-turn if they can’t do anything against it. Holding the line is almost never a bad play unless you’re facing a deck with Banish effects.

Late Game (12+) – You shouldn’t be here if you played aggressively well, so you’re probably holding the line. Utilize Gardener to copy Mace of Encumbrance and Glass Helm of Remedy to halt any aggression and recover health along with Barrow Stalker. You can either play two Gardeners of Swords into a Master of Arms to storm off or you can play more Masters of Arms to copy enough items onto your Gardener of Swords to OTK your opponent if you’re low and can’t risk it.

*Discards:
Don’t be afraid to discard a good card if it doesn’t keep you alive or is too expensive, you might as well have not cycled if you draw a dead card. That said play to win, not to survive the turn. The strongest discard targets are the items, most importantly Dragon Priest Mask and Glass Helm of Remedy as it lets you draw more with Master of Arms and recover health respectively; they’re also weak draws till late game.

Strengths:
• Fun, stormy combos
• Strong Control Shell, allows for good play into Aggro and Midrange decks
• Capable of strong recover after board wipes
• Utilizes discards to maximum potential

Weaknesses:
• Banish, banish, banish. Dismantles this deck almost instantly.
Cast Into Time can almost cost the game on the spot
• Less consistent than Item-Sorcerer in terms of draws

Sideboard/Replacements
• As of the creation of this list, Altar and Support based decks have risen in popularity, however in the future you might want to find alternative 5 drops. The only notable cards in 5 is Memory Wraith versus necromancer decks and item decks, and Doppelganger to possibly cheese out a win. If you find that you’re on the back foot more often than not, Telvanni Oathman makes for a good tech too.
• A cheaper alternative to Cornerclub Gambler is Elusive Schemer, though it’s weaker to Sorcerer’s Negation and doesn’t discard masks as needed.
• You may find Eclipse Baroness to be too slow against an aggro matchup, you can drop it for something lower on the mana curve if you wish such as the previously mentioned Elusive Schemer or Embassy Disguise.

I hope this was helpful and I’d love to answer any questions you may have. May the Hist Guide you!

It’s definitely a nice change of pace from the more midrange item decks.
